Not every piece you make is a success. It would be so informative for artists to show their “near misses” or “almost theres” or actual “failures. Usually they don’t.

 

Here is one of mine. I attempted to illustrate my friend Claire Haye’s excellent poem “I am a Tree”. I could not quite figure out how NOT to be so literal, so I drew branches growing out of a naked woman’s hand and put an egg in her hand. It’s…..interesting…..but not what I would call a success.

 

A difficult task indeed. But I thought you’d like to see my failed attempt. If you’ve got a better idea of how to illustrate this concept, send it my way please.
