What do we want? Recognition!

I recently published an essay at about the artist’s search for internal and external recognition.

“If a tree falls in a forest and no one is around to hear it, does it make a sound?”

Most artists want it.  Recognition.  It is the validation from our world that our work has merit, is valuable, and that we are worthy.   Yes, we savor the experience of creating art, say often that our work is its own reward,  and that maturing as artists is what we are truly after.  Nonetheless, we cannot help but question the weight of our efforts if there’s no one to see what we have accomplished.  As the quote above questions: Am I an artist if no one else agrees with me?
